Melusine: Ready-to-use venom peptides microplates- for drug discovery and more -Natural evolutionMelusine is a branch of Atheris Laboratories activities. Atheris has a long history and expertise in toxinology, venom research and has patiently built worldwide networks in the venom field. As a co-founder of the Toxinomics Foundation, Atheris participates actively to promote the knowledge in venom bioactive potentials. Because of its excellence in peptidomic, proteomic and bioinformatic approaches, Atheris has built a world-known reputation in the analysis and the discovery of peptides and proteins. Hence, the Melusine venture is a natural evolution of Atheris activities. Long experience and historyDuring more than a decade, Atheris has collected and stored large worldwide varieties of venoms from different animal species. The venom collection of Atheris is unique in the world, probably by far the largest. It comprises well over 1'200 different venom types. In addition, all Atheris scientists have a considerable experience in venom proteins and peptides and publish some of their studies in peer-reviewed journals. Venom, a unique natural library of bioactive moleculesVenoms are a rich and complex mixture of molecules where peptides and proteins are broadly represented. These components have been evolved by Nature to catch and digest preys or to protect against predators. More than 100’000 venomous animals are described and each venom is composed of hundreds of bioactive ingredients. Each of these molecules is highly potent and selective for physiological targets (ion channels, receptors, enzymes, cell lines, etc.), many of which play key roles in major human diseases. Typically, venom bioactives are effective at low nanomolar - picomolar ranges, which, in the case of peptides, renders them affordable to produce for industrial applications. Exploration and exploitation of biodiversity for health is an exciting adventure and a most promising enterprise. From venoms to drugsAlready 4 drug classes coming from venom proteins have been marketed and appreciated by patients for hypertension, pain, hemostasis and diabetes. Furthermore, dozens of candidates are currently in drug development pipelines, which will further enrich the medical field. The Melusine team would like to contribute to your success because, it has the firm conviction that venoms are full of value for current and future therapeutic needs.
